Job
Opportunites
Dear Friend, A number
of job, internship, fellowship, and volunteer opportunities are opening up at
the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP). If you are interested in #1, #2, or #3 below,
please e-mail your resume to MPP@MPP.ORG, or fax your resume to 202-232-0442.
Please specify which position you are applying for. Please do not call -- we can
NOT accept telephone applications or inquiries. Thank you.
#1. FULL-TIME
JOB OPENING IN NOVEMBER
Effective immediately, MPP is seeking someone to work full-time in the MPP
office in Washington, D.C., during the month of November. Wages are competitive
and negotiable. Job responsibilities are two-fold: (1) Calling and following up
with the relevant staff members in the 90 most supportive House offices on Capitol
Hill for a specific project that will conclude on December 1. (2) E-mailing and
tabulating responses from hundreds of state legislators nationwide; this project
will also conclude on December 1. While this position is guaranteed through the
first week of December, MPP hopes to make this a permanent position, depending
on the availability of funding and the quality and enthusiasm of the candidate.
Should the position become permanent, the job duties after November would consist
of administrative assistant and legislative assistant work.
#2. INTERNSHIPS
FOR THE SPRING AND SUMMER MPP
is establishing two internships for the spring semester and two internships for
the summer semester. Part-time or full-time is negotiable. While it is preferred
that the internships be unpaid, a small stipend might be available for particularly
qualified and enthusiastic candidates. Internship responsibilities will include
some or all of the following: - writing letters-to-the-editor, op-eds, and other
short pieces - researching and tracking legislation (mostly on the Web) - ordering
marijuana-related reports - helping with phone calls to the media - occassionally
stuffing envelopes and performing other necessary administrative duties It is
also possible to focus on one substantive project, which would very likely include
writing a more lengthy report to be used and distributed by MPP. (A selection
of report ideas is available upon request.) An internship that focuses on re-designing
MPP's Web site is also possible. (Please see below for MPP's Web design needs.)
#3. VOLUNTEER
FROM YOUR HOME: HELP RE-DESIGN MPP'S WEB SITE MPP
is looking for a team of volunteers -- and a team leader -- to help re-design
MPP's Web site. MPP is looking for people who can (1) bring more creativity to
the site, (2) organize the already- existing information in a more user-friendly
hierarchy, and (3) add additional content to the site. This Web work can be done
from home.
#4. APPLICATIONS
FOR FELLOWSHIPS DUE BY JANUARY 21, 2000
The Open Society Institute and The Lindesmith Center are currently offering two
kinds of fellowships. MPP encourages applicants to consider working with MPP as
the sponsoring organization; a tax-exempt sponsoring organization is required
for the Soros Harm Reduction and Drug Policy Reform Fellowship. (Please see http://www.lindesmith.org/grants/fellow.html.)
* Soros Harm Reduction and Drug Policy Reform Fellowship The Soros Harm Reduction
and Drug Policy Reform Fellowship seeks to promote the development of innovative
health, criminal, and/or civil justice programs that minimize the adverse effects
of both drug use and drug prohibition. It is geared primarily to recent graduates
of professional schools -- nursing, social work, medicine, law, etc. -- who wish
to develop and implement harm reduction studies and/or policies. * Lindesmith
Fellowship in Drug Policy Studies The Lindesmith Fellowship in Drug Policy Studies
will aid doctoral students who have been "advanced to candidacy" (i.e., working
on the dissertation) and/or Post-docs who have completed their Ph.D (or equivalent)
within the past six years to undertake social science, humanities, and policy
research on the history and politics of drug prohibition as well as its costs,
consequences and alternatives.
#5. VOLUNTEER
IN THE MPP OFFICE
Of course, if you live in or near Washington, D.C., we are always looking for
volunteers to come to the MPP office to stuff envelopes, do data entry, and make
phone calls. Please e-mail MPP@MPP.ORG if you are interested in donating your
time -- weekdays, weeknights, or weekends.
Sincerely, Robert
D. Kampia, Executive Director Marijuana Policy Project P.O. Box 77492, Washington,
D.C. 20013 202-232-0442 (fax) mpp@mpp.org, http://www.mpp.org
